Can i write off building a garage at my home address for storage even though we have a shop at another address - shop storage
Generally not. Your home must be your principal place of business to qualify for the deduction of office at home. Published 587 See, here's a link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p587.pdf
If your house is your principal place of business, then this would be a legitimate deduction, but you can not only the cost of building the garage as point charges. You can use a deduction for public services and take other direct costs and depreciation of the structure. Residential real estate is depreciated in a period of 27.5 years, although the IRS may attempt to argue that this is a commercial building with its use and require a depreciation of 40 years.
